This module is open to students who are taking Spanish Language 4 and is designed to develop understanding of the study of language contact as one of the outcomes of a transnational and globalized world. The course will highlight the importance of understanding the communication across diverse cultures and will introduce the political, social, educational and linguistic factors that trigger language change. Transnationalism will be used as a methodology to understand linguistic phenomena such as bilingualism and multilingualism and discussions will be based on examples from Spanish in contact with other languages, e.g. English-Spanish in the USA, Italian-Spanish in Argentina, Portuguese-Spanish in Latin America and Europe, and Welsh-Spanish in Patagonia). Students will also be expected to explore other Spanish-related case studies.
