This module examines the 'nationality question' in Russia and the Soviet Union. It places specific emphasis on the ways in which the moving image in Soviet Union and Russia took part in the processes of 'nation-building' and 'identity-formation' over the course of one hundred years. The module will introduce and critically examine the concepts, such as, national identity, ethnicity, citizenship, transnationalism, etc., which bear upon our understanding of Russian and Soviet History. It fosters interdisciplinary research by linking Russian/Soviet cinema studies with Russian/Soviet social, political and cultural history.
Core texts include but are not limited to the following:
On Nationhood and National Question (General):
On the ‘National Question’ in Russian, Soviet and Post-Soviet Contexts:
On the Identity Question in Russian/Soviet/Post-Soviet Cinema
