How do I Apply?

The academic roles currently available are displayed on our recruitment website.

Please find the relevant vacancy which will include a copy of the job description for the post. When you are ready to apply for the role please click the 'Apply now' link.

You will be able to save your application and return to it later (until the post closes).

If you have any technical difficulties with your application please contact us at e.recruitment@durham.ac.uk.

What to Submit

For all academic, teaching and research vacancies we ask that candidates submit a CV and a covering letter that outlines your experience, strengths and potential against the criteria set out in the job description.

Most of our departments will request that applicants submit two of your most significant pieces of work. Please carefully check the job description as some roles require the submission of alternative or additional documents (such as extra significant pieces of work, a personal research plan or metrics). If you have any difficulties submitting your work please contact us at e.recruitment@durham.ac.uk.

Papers

If a job description requires candidates to submit papers; the details about what the department would like submitted will be outlined in the job description.

If possible, please attach files in PDF or Word format or as a Microsoft Word document (.doc/.docx). The full list of file types is available on the relevant page of the application form.

If you require further details about what to submit, please get in touch with the department contact (details are in the job description) or send an email to the HR Recruitment team on e.recruitment@durham.ac.uk.

References

You should provide details of 3 referees (academic, research, teaching or professional) depending on the role applied for. If one of those referees is not your current line manager, we will also need the details of your current line manager to seek an employment reference, which will only be taken up if we make you an offer.

Some things to know about when we will seek and how we will use references:

  • We will seek academic/research/teaching/professional references during the application process; normally if you get long-listed. We will seek an employment reference (from your current line manager) if we make you an offer.
  • In providing the referees' details you are consenting to us contacting the referees and providing them with a copy of your CV. If you do not consent to us contacting (some or all) of your referees or us providing them with your CV, you must clearly indicate this at the time of application (noting that the long listing panel would consider your application without the benefit of references).
  • Academic referees should not (if possible) include your PhD supervisor(s) and a majority should be from a University other than your own. We would ask that you alert your referees to this application as soon as possible so that we can quickly obtain references should you be progressed to the long list stage.
  • Academic/research/teaching references sought for long-listed candidates may be made available to the panel during the shortlisting process.
  • We will seek a reference from your current line manager if we make you an offer of employment (albeit you may have also nominated your line manager as an academic/research/teaching referee). Please clearly indicate which referee is your current line manager and please let us know if we should only approach them once an offer has been made.

Submission of Your Application

Once you have submitted your application, you will be unable to retrieve and edit it. We would therefore ask that you check the details carefully and you can save the application and go back to it later. If you require further information about closing times please refer to our help section.

Once you have clicked the submit button, you will receive an email confirming the application is completed.
