All applications will be considered after the closing date. The process from receipt of application to interview differs for each post but is normally outlined in the job description. Typical steps for an academic post would include longlisting, reading submitted papers and shortlisting of candidates.
Shortlisted candidates are normally invited to the University for a day or more for interviews and to meet colleagues (and often students) from across the department.
If you have unfortunately not been successful at any stage in the process, we will let you know.
We always aim to give you as much notice as possible if you have been invited to interview but please check the job description when you apply and diarise any interview dates which have been provided. If you are not available on the interview date, do let us know in your application so that alternative arrangements can be considered. In some circumstances, we may be able to facilitate an interview by Zoom or MS Teams. In the event that it is not possible to arrange an alternative date, interviews will proceed although you may be offered an interview if we have not appointed a candidate from the original interview round.
If you live more than 30 miles from Durham, you can reclaim reasonable costs to get to Durham and potentially accommodation while you are here. Details about our expenses policy related to travel and accommodation will be sent to you in advance of your interview.
If you have been invited to interview, we would really appreciate it if you could confirm your attendance as soon as possible.
We will be in contact with you as soon as possible, normally by telephone.
Thereafter we will send you an offer of employment which will be conditional on a number of things, such as the University receiving satisfactory references and ensuring that we've seen all of the documents we need to see, for example, your qualifications.
We will be in touch if you have been unsuccessful at any stage of the process (although please don't let that put you off making future applications).
While we appreciate the time and effort that goes into your application, given the large number of applications we receive, we are normally only able to provide feedback to candidates who have been interviewed but were not offered a post.
