Bishop Guli Francis-Dehqani was born in Iran in 1966. Her father, Hassan Dehqani-Tafti, was the Anglican Bishop in Iran and their family was forced to leave the country in 1980, in the wake of the Iranian Revolution. Arriving in Britain as a refugee, she went on to study Music at the University of Nottingham and Theology at the University of Bristol, where she was awarded her PhD in 1999, the same year in which she was ordained priest. After serving as a priest in the diocese of Southwark, and as chaplain to the Royal Academy of Music, she served in the diocese of Peterborough, becoming an honorary canon of Peterborough Cathedral in 2016. She was appointed bishop of Loughborough in 2017, being the first woman from an ethnic minority background to become a bishop in the Church of England. She was translated to the diocese of Chelmsford in 2021 and became a member of the House of Lords later that year. Bishop Guli currently serves as the Church of England’s Bishop for Housing and is leading the Church of England’s response to the national housing crisis.
