Lieutenant General Robin Brims CB CBE DSO DL,

‘Faith Under Fire: A Personal Reflection on Modern Conflict’,

7.00-8.30 p.m. Durham University, Elvet Riverside 149.

Robin Brims joined the British Army in 1970 and, due to his connections with The Durham Light Infantry, was commissioned into the Light Infantry, its successor regiment. His early career was spent in England, Germany and Northern Ireland. After commanding a brigade in Bosnia in 1995, he was Chief of Staff at Headquarters Northern Ireland at the time of the ceasefires and the Good Friday Agreement. He then returned to Bosnia to command a Multinational Division. This was followed by command of 1 (UK) Armoured Division during the 2003 invasion of Iraq. In 2005, he returned to Iraq as Deputy Commanding General and Senior British Military Representative. On his retirement in 2007, he was appointed Vice-Chancellor of the University of Kurdistan-Hawler in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq. After two years reorganising the university, he returned to Northeast England, where he is involved in projects including work with universities on conflict resolution. He is also involved in youth movements and with his local church, where he is an Authorised Lay Minister. He has recently been elected to the General Synod of the Church of England.
