On Tuesday 26 April at 5.15pm, Stephen Bann, Emeritus Professor of the History of Art from the University of Bristol presents the 2022 Centre for Visual Arts and Culture / Institute for Medieval and Early Modern Studies Lecture on Signs and Traces of the English Civil War

Signs and Traces of the English Civil War

The English Civil War has provoked many different historical interpretations over the years. But this lecture is addressed in particular to the visible evidence of the war that can still be observed in museum collections and on sites throughout the country. I will examine the portraiture of the period, but also interpret the testimony of memorial inscriptions in cathedrals and churches, taking into account the surviving evidence of vandalism. I will also suggest that the visual records of the eighteenth century point to different ways of coming to terms with the memory of the brutal conflict.
