Graham and Joanna Barker Scholarship for Music

The University gratefully acknowledges the Graham and Joanna Barker Scholarship for Music. The Barker Scholarship for Music supports an undergraduate student who exhibits excellence and leadership in music. The scholarship recipient may or may not choose to formally read Music, although he or she will be expected to actively participate in the musical life of the University, representing Durham in local, regional, national and/or international performances. The Barker Scholarship can be held for the duration of the recipient's undergraduate studies at Durham.

How to apply

  1. Apply for a course

    Submit an academic application to Durham University via UCAS prior to the scholarship deadline of 31st January 2024.

  2. Complete a scholarship application

    • Submit an online scholarship application including a personal statement describing why you feel you should be awarded the Graham and Joanna Barker Scholarship for Music
    • Provide 2 different pieces of music of approximately 3 minutes in length to be accessed via youtube links
    • a reference of no more than 1,000 words from a suitable adult e.g. a teacher at your school, the conductor of an ensemble in which you play, the director of a production in which you have been involved; explaining why you are suitable to be awarded the Graham and Joanna Barker Scholarship for Music sent directly from the referee to scholarships.advice@durham.ac.uk

    Please ensure your referee submits the reference on letter headed paper which contains their name, position, contact details and your full name.

  3. Selection process

    Your application will be considered by the Vice-Chancellor's Scholarship panel which includes senior academic members of the University with expertise in Sport, Music and Arts. Guidance may also be sought from colleagues with musical experience.
