The Institute of Advanced Study (IAS) is a home for growing big ideas.  We support a broad and inclusive interdisciplinary community from across the full spectrum of Durham academics, where different perspectives are brought together to develop creative approaches to interesting and important problems.

In addition to support for large scale projects, we remain very keen to assist research conversations, workshops, and network building which have the potential to develop into major projects in the future. We therefore invite colleagues to apply for small scale funding (up-to £1500) to help the early-stage development of ambitious interdisciplinary projects during 2024/25.

The £1500 funding can, for example, be used to support costs to fund short visits of external visitors to Durham (travel and accommodation); fund hosting conferences and workshops (travel and accommodation for key participants, catering); fund short visits for Durham research staff to visit other key researchers).

The lead applicant must be a member of Durham Faculty. The application form which contains full guidance is  available at the bottom of this page.

Successful applicants will become Associate Fellows of the IAS, and will have access to the facilities and resources of the IAS in Cosin's Hall, such as IAS seminar room for holding events, the IAS common room, and hot-desking facilities (if available). In addition, if Visiting Scholars are outside of Michaelmas and Epiphany terms, there may also be potential to offer office space to Visiting Scholars.

The application deadline is 5pm Friday 10 May 2024, and the outcome will be communicated w/c 03 June.

Colleagues interested in developing proposals are welcome to contact any member of the IAS team including the Director, Professor Alex Easton (alexander.easton@durham.ac.uk), any of the IAS Co-Directors, Dr Margarita Staykova (SCI, margarita.staykova@durham.ac.uk); Professor Gretchen Larsen (DBS, gretchen.larsen@durham.ac.uk); Dr Rille Raaper(SSH, rille.raaper@durham.ac.uk) or Professor Patrick Zuk (A&H patrick.zuk@durham.ac.uk).

Enquiries can also be made to the IAS Manager, Linda Crowe (ias.manager@durham.ac.uk).
