Our academics are leading the way for world-class research and their influence and research quality has been recognised with their inclusion in the prestigious Clarivate Highly Cited Researchers for this year.
Professor Carlos Frenk, Professor Adrian Jenkins and Professor Tom Theuns from our Institute for Computational Cosmology have been named among the most cited researchers in the world.
Professor Frenk, Jenkins and Theuns are all leading experts in cosmology and space science research.
Professor Frenk, Ogden Professor of Fundamental Physics and founder and former Director of the Institute for Computational Cosmology (ICC) is one of the original proponents of the theory of cold dark matter which has now become the standard model of cosmology.
He is one of world’s foremost researchers in Cosmology having received over £70m in research grants and has been named “Nobel Class” by Clarivate for his fundamental studies of galaxy formation and evolution, cosmic structure and dark matter halos.
Upon inclusion in this highly prestigious list, Professor Frenk, said: "It is a great honour to be included in such a prestigious list. I would like to extend this recognition to my collaborators at Durham and abroad, particularly to my PhD students and postdocs without whom the research that is being recognised today would not have been possible."
Professor Jenkins has pioneered techniques in cosmological simulations and the nature of dark matter that are now in widespread use across the world.
Professor Theuns is a leading expert on cosmological simulations of the formation of galaxies and has carried out ground-breaking investigations of the evolution of gas – the raw material of stars in the universe.
Clarivate Highly Cited Researchers identifies global research scientists and social scientists who have demonstrated exceptional influence – reflected through their publication of highly cited research papers.
The inclusion of our prominent scientists demonstrates the significant influence that Durham research has among fellow academics worldwide who have referenced the University findings in their own studies.
Our Department of Physics is a thriving centre for research and education. Ranked 4th in the UK by The Guardian University Guide 2022, we are proud to deliver a teaching and learning experience for students which closely aligns with the research-intensive values and practices of the University.
