Examples of art work in the Fragments from History exhibition
This tour has been specifically thought for those visitors who would like to learn more about the current exhibition hosted inside Durham Castle and have more time to enjoy it at the end of a standard tour.
Join us for one of our Castle tours and experience history and tales from 900 years of living history with one of our knowledgeable guides. Find out about the Prince-Bishops whose seat of power was based here for hundreds of years at Durham Castle and learn how the building became the first college of Durham University. You will then have the option to go back to the Fragments from History exhibition to spend more time exploring the space at your own pace and to engage with some of the makers, who will be on hand to talk about the displays and guide you through their artwork and techniques.
Between September 2022 and February 2023 members of creative textile group Take-a-Stitch 2 Durham have been busy creating unique works of textile art to celebrate Durham Castle’s 950th anniversary. Inspired by the building’s history, people, and architecture, they have produced works of art, through traditional hand embroidery, machine embroidery, contemporary hand embroidery and a wealth of mixed media, that brings to life stories of mythical creatures, bishops, and other interesting people and events in the Castle history. You can learn more about their work here
