Course details

Throughout the BA Accounting and Management you’ll study a breadth and depth of accounting and finance subjects giving you the opportunity to take your knowledge to a new level. Areas of study may include accounting information, the legal, regulatory and social context within which accounting operates.

What’s more, if you choose the relevant modules, you may gain exemption from some of the ACA, ACCA and CIMA examinations once you’ve completed your degree. Just another small step that will help make your way up the career ladder a little easier.

Year 1

In the first year, compulsory modules will provide you with an introduction to accountancy, business and the key fundamentals to examine and evaluate modern financial markets. Typical modules may include introductions to financial and management accounting, economics, finance and mathematics and the world of business.

Year 2

In the second year, compulsory modules allow you to continue your studies in accounting and finance with a choice of optional modules considering the broader business context including taxation and law and the opportunity to study a foreign language.

Year 3

In an increasingly globalised world, a period of international study is a major benefit and can help you to stand out in a crowded job market. All of our business degrees offer you the option of spending your third year studying abroad at one of our international partner universities. This is an opportunity to develop foreign language skills, experience another country and learn about its culture as well as adding an international dimension to your overall employability.

You may decide to study at one of our exchange universities for a full-year study placement period in your third year of study and this then becomes the third year of a four year degree.

Opportunities for study abroad have in the past included Australia, Canada, Chile, China/Hong Kong, Columbia, Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, The Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Singapore, Spain, South Korea, Sweden and USA. Funding opportunities (open to both EU and non-EU students) may be available through scholarships offered by the host institution, the British Council and/or other funding bodies. For up to date information on locations and funding, please go to www.durham.ac.uk/international/studyabroad

The Study Abroad year fees are set annually by the University. For the definitive amount of the Study Abroad year fees payable please contact our Study Abroad Team.

The offer of a place on a ‘study abroad’ degree does not imply that Durham University Business School guarantees to place you with one of our partner institutions, nor a partner of the your choice. All study abroad programmes are subject to approval by the Business School. Some partner relationships have restricted access and so are not available to everyone. The Business School, in association with the University, will assist you in applying for a study abroad place, but it is your responsibility to apply for such a place, and the right of the Business School/University to allocate you to available places as we deem best. In the event that you are unable to obtain a study abroad place, transfer to the equivalent ‘non-study abroad’ programme is guaranteed provided you are eligible to transfer on academic grounds. In line with Home Office rules, if you are from outside the EU you will transfer onto the ‘with study abroad’ degree only once you have successfully secured a placement (normally at the end of your second year of study). Therefore due to visa requirements, we recommend that if you are an international student interested in the study abroad year you apply for this degree type when making your application to us via UCAS.

Year 4

Moving to a more research-led teaching orientation in the third year, you are required to produce a double module Dissertation in an area of accounting and management. Additionally, you will study two compulsory modules exploring the world of accounting. You will have the option to choose two modules from a range of business, accounting and finance options. You may also choose to continue your study of a foreign language.

Course details

From preparing and presenting financial information to interpreting data and business planning, this degree opens the door to opportunities both within the accountancy profession and in business management with leading organisations in both business and the financial sector and beyond.

Not sure what to study?: We have a suite of accounting degrees (BSc Accounting, BA Accounting and Management and BA Accounting and Finance). This degree combines accounting, with management and finance knowledge and skills. If you would prefer to study just accounting, please see BSc Accounting. If you would prefer to study more finance, please see BA Accounting and Finance.

Please note: The information on these pages is indicative of the current course structure and title and is subject to change. For 2024 entry we are reviewing all of our accounting programmes and, amongst other things, as a result of the review the title of this degree may change from BA to BSc (this will not affect the purpose or the aims of the degree, it will more accurately reflect a modern interpretation of an accounting-based degree).

Course structure

Year 1

Core modules:

Financial Accounting covers the basic concepts and techniques involved in financial accounting reports, including the preparation of basic financial statements.

Fundamentals of Management Accounting. In this module you will learn about the role of the management accountant. The module introduces the basic concepts of management accounting and will give you an understanding of the objectives of management accounting within an organisation.

Managing behaviour and organisations provides a fundamental foundation to understand how to manage people and organisations within contemporary society. To introduce students to the concepts that underlie explanations of individual and group behaviour. Students will be encouraged to apply these concepts to a range of issues including their own experience through learning from lectures, workshops and investigative projects.

Examples of optional modules:

  • Principles of taxation
  • Business law
  • Ethics in accounting
  • Introduction to financial economics
  • Changing world of business.

Year 2

Financial Reporting builds on the skills introduced in Year 1. You will learn about preparation of financial statements for a single company and a company group, including the application of relevant International Financial Reporting Standards.

Management Accounting further develops your knowledge of management accounting practice and helps you apply your knowledge to business scenarios and decision making. You will learn to present calculations, critically evaluate the benefits and limitations of management accounting techniques and provide reasoned recommendations.

Assurance explores the audit process from planning and risk assessment, gathering evidence, drawing conclusions, through to reporting. Learning is set within the context of professional ethics.

Examples of optional modules:

  • Information Systems
  • Operations Management
  • Entrepreneurship
  • Taxation
  • Innovation Management
  • Consumer Behaviour
  • Financial management techniques for accountants
  • Business strategy for accountants.

Year 3

You will spend Year 3 studying abroad at one of our partner universities. This flexible year is designed around your area of study and interests. Not only will you gain valuable academic experiences to take forward to your final year and beyond, study abroad is also an opportunity to expand your cultural horizons, develop language skills and meet new people.

In previous years, opportunities for study abroad have included Australia, Canada, Chile, China/Hong Kong, Columbia, Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Singapore, Spain and South Korea. Funding may be available through scholarships offered by the host institution, the British Council and/or other funding bodies.

Year 4

Research Methods develops your knowledge of the techniques and skills needed to undertake an independent research project like the dissertation. You will learn to distinguish between research philosophies, identify appropriate research methods, and complete a review of relevant literature.

The Dissertation, on an accounting topic of your choice, develops your ability to plan and manage your own learning. It provides you with an opportunity to research the topic and present your findings and conclusions. The 10,000-word dissertation is worth one third of your final year credits. This piece of work is highly-prized by graduates and is often used in job or Masters degree applications to exemplify the critical, research-led training that our graduates have undertaken.

Examples of optional modules:

  • Corporate governance

  • Corporate entrepreneurship
  • Service operation management
  • Leadership
  • Corporate responsibility and sustainability
  • Big data analytics
  • New venture creation
  • Audit and assurance
  • Corporate reporting
  • Tax planning for business.

Learning

On this degree you will learn through a combination of lectures, seminars, workshops, informal but scheduled one-on-one support, and self-directed learning, such as research, reading, and writing. All of these are supported by a state-of-the-art virtual learning environment, Learn Ultra.

Seminars and workshops are much smaller groups than lectures, small enough to allow greater one-on-one interaction with teaching staff. Workshops also allow hands-on experience in solving accounting and finance problems. This emphasis on small-group teaching reflects a conscious choice to enhance the quality of your learning experience rather than the quantity of formal sessions. In fact, the degree is designed to feature fewer formal sessions and more independent research as you move from your first to your final year.

Small-group teaching and one-on-one attention from the personal academic advisor (provided at the start) are part of the learning experience throughout, but by your final year classroom time gives way, to some extent, to independent research, including a dissertation – supported by one-on-one supervision – that makes up a third of your final year credits. In this way the degree gives you the opportunity to transform from a consumer of knowledge in the classroom to a generator of knowledge, ready for professional or postgraduate life.

These formal teaching arrangements are supported by “drop-in” surgeries with teaching staff and induction sessions that begin in the week before the start of the course and continue at key times throughout each year. You can also attend an extensive programme of research-focused seminars where staff and visiting scholars present their cutting-edge research.
