2025 Mentor of the Year Irshad Paurobally

Each year, alongside their programme, Durham MBA (Full-time) students are paired with a mentor to help them navigate the demands of study and prepare for their transition into the workplace. Students are then invited to nominate their mentor for the annual Mentor of the Year award, recognising outstanding support and contribution.

The mentoring scheme is a key element of the MBA programme, connecting students with experienced professionals and alumni who provide practical guidance, inspiration, and encouragement.

We're delighted to announce that the 2025 Mentor of the Year is Irshad Paurobally. Irshad completed his MBA at Durham in 2018 as a member of St Cuthbert’s Society. During his time as a student, he received both the Full-time MBA Exceptional Contribution Award and the Innovation Award during the MBA Boardroom Exercise. Since graduating, he has built a successful career and is now Lead for Strategy Delivery at FCMB Bank UK.

Reflecting on the award, Irshad said:

“As a Durham alumnus, it gives me great joy to contribute back to the community that has given me so much. Mentoring allows me to share experiences, gain fresh perspectives, and learn from the aspirations of our bright MBA candidates. Each conversation reminds me of the transformative power of a Durham education and the lifelong connections it fosters.”

Irshad was nominated by his mentee, Harshal Kacholia, who shared:

"From our very first call, Irshad set the tone for a journey that was insightful, supportive, and truly transformational. As a proud Durham alumnus, he was deeply familiar with the course, and the challenges students face. He openly shared his own journey, the lessons he learned, what worked for him, and what didn’t. His ability to translate experience into practical guidance was invaluable. Irshad’s mentorship stood out for its clarity, patience, and commitment. His advice was always precise and thoughtful, never generic.

What impressed me most was his deep sense of belonging to Durham University Business School. He often spoke about the importance of alumni engagement and how we, as future alumni, could contribute to this community. Another strength of his mentorship was the way he blended professional advice with personal life lessons. These practical tips gave me confidence and clarity in shaping my MBA journey. It gave me confidence, direction, and a sense of belonging. More importantly, it built a relationship that will continue well beyond the Business School."

The mentoring programme continues to be a defining feature of the Durham MBA, offering students the opportunity to learn directly from accomplished professionals and alumni.
