As part of the Student Art Prize 2022/23, inspired by the concept of ‘Sanctuary’, internationally exhibited sculptor and photographer Sarah Danays will discuss her own work which, for several decades, has addressed women’s issues; particularly violence against women.

Sarah Danays work, aided by her dead collaborators and grounded in academic research, focuses on body parts and broken antiquities to discuss violence and trauma - a fine art practice she describes as her metaphysical surgery.
The artist is currently in development with ‘Fragments of the Innocents: no recovery position’ a sculpture in stone that will confront the most conclusive act of violence against a woman: femicide. In her talk, which will blend autobiography and research, Danays will share how her considered methods, objects and materials hope to offer not only a safe holding place for the memory of a violated body, but also a sanctuary for the soul.
In collaboration with Durham University’s Centre for Research into Violence and Abuse (CRiVA) and introduced by the Centre’s Director, Professor Nicole Westmarland.
