Founded in 1669, Cosin’s Library is one of the earliest public libraries in the North of England. In this talk, we will explore why Bishop John Cosin created this library and why it is so significant.

A historic book inside Cosin's Library

Cosin’s Library is one of the earliest public libraries in the North East of England. Hidden in the heart of Durham, the library was founded in 1669 by Bishop John Cosin to give local people access to ‘good books’. In this talk, Dr Danielle Westerhof Rare Books Curator at Durham University will explore why Bishop John Cosin created this library and why it is so significant. 

Free and open to all.

This talk is part of the Thursday Twilight Openings at Palace Green Library. The talks take place on the 4th Thursday of every month at Palace Green Library. Find out more about the museums and the collections from across Durham University, including Archive and Special Collections, Art Collection, Cosin's Library, Durham Castle Museum, Museum of Archaeology and Oriental Museum.  No need to book.

World Heritage Visitor Centre and the Museum of Archaeology are also open until 7pm during the Twilight Openings.
