Celebrate World Heritage Day this Spring by joining us for a special event at Durham Castle. Start your day with a wholesome brunch offered through the castle servery and spend time in the Great Hall to enjoy your meal as you take it the beautiful surroundings. After your brunch, one of our knowledgeable tour guides will take you on a bespoke tour of the castle, where you will experience history and tales from 1000 years of living history.

Built on the orders of William the Conqueror in the 1070s, Durham Castle began life as a motte-and-bailey castle. It soon became a palace to showcase the wealth of the Prince-Bishops whose semi-regal powers made them one of the most powerful political and military men in the country, until it started its new life as the first college of Durham University in the 19th century.

The brunch will be served from 10.15am in the Castle Servery and will include the following:

  • Selection of hot items – bacon, sausage, eggs, tomatoes, beans, mushrooms
  • Toast, bagels, cereals, pastries
  • Selection of cold meats and cheeses
  • Fresh fruit
  • Fruit juice
  • Tea/coffee

The guided tour will start promptly 11.15am from the Castle courtyard and will last approx. 45minutes - 1 hour.

Please head to Palace Green Library reception (in between the Castle and Cathedral) between 10am-10.15am to check in and collect a lanyard before you head into the Castle.
