World Heritage Day Celebrations - Durham Castle Self-Guided Day

Come and visit Durham Castle today - enjoy a free self-guided visit and our re-enactment group, Vanguard, showcasing Norman weapons and battling in the castle courtyard.

Activities for children, colouring and dressing up available in the Great Hall.

Our friendly guides and volunteers will be around Durham Castle to answer your questions and share some of the stories and hidden history of the Castle. Built in the Norman period as an imposing fortress, Durham Castle’s story is entwined with that of the Prince-Bishops of Durham, whose semi-regal status made them some of the most powerful and wealthy men in the country.

The castle will be open 12pm-5pm, last entry 4.15pm.

Admission is free. All children under the age of 16 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

No need to book in advance. 

• The historic nature and layout of the Castle means that the majority of the building is inaccessible to wheelchair users. The tour route involves many steps and staircases, some of which are uneven. Any visitors with accessibility needs please contact 0191 334 2932.
• Guide and assistance dogs are welcome, but unfortunately family pets are not permitted.
