Heritage Open Day: Free Self-Guided Day at Durham Castle
As part of this year's Heritage Open Day celebrations, join us for a free self-guided visit to Durham Castle today and enjoy the historic and beautiful surroundings at your own pace.
Experience history and tales from 1000 years of living history. Sitting at the heart of Durham's UNESCO World Heritage Site and built in the Norman period as an imposing fortress, Durham Castle’s story is entwined with that of the Prince-Bishops of Durham, whose semi-regal status made them some of the most powerful and wealthy men in the country. Since the 19th century the Castle has been home to the students of University College, part of Durham University.
Our friendly guides and volunteers will be around Durham Castle to answer your questions and share some of the stories and hidden history of the Castle.
A great visit for all the family to enjoy. Activities for children, games and dressing up to be provided in the Great Hall.
