Biography

After graduating with a BA Accounting and Finance degree in 1991, Gary decided on the industry route to a professional accountancy qualification and joined British Nuclear Fuels (BNFL) on a graduate training programme. During his time at BNFL Gary qualified as a Management Accountant with the Chartered Institue of Management Accountants (CIMA).

In 1995 Gary joined Deluxe Data, a US technology company providing electronic banking and funds transfer software to financial institutions, and became the Finance Director (FD) of their UK operations in 1998, reporting in to the US headquarters in Milwaukee.

Gary then became International Finance Director for a new de-merged NASDAQ-quoted business – eFunds - and took on financial responsibility for their UK, India and Australia operations. eFunds International became the largest third party outsourcer in India, and Gary was involved in establishing new back office facilities across India, and leading a Delhi based finance team, reporting in to Phoenix, US.

In 2002 Gary took the opportunity to join a UK management buyout team as a consultant FD, managing the finances of a national heating distribution company from their UK head office in Birmingham, until their sale in 2004.

Gary then became an interim consultant undertaking several long-term assignments including a financial controller role at a leading social care charity in Leeds, a strategic FD role at a housing procurement company in Liverpool, a strategic consultant to the board of a large North West care home provider, and several non-executive director board appointments.

Gary also demonstrated his entrepreneurial flair in 2006, by identifying a tax business opportunity in Spain, following the sale of his own Spanish property. He established a tax consultancy specialising in all types of Spanish tax for UK owners of Spanish property.

Since 2008 Gary has been a tutor teaching the professional accountancy qualifications – ACCA, CIMA, ICAEW – intially for Kaplan and then since 2011 for BPP Professional Education.

In 2011 Gary moved in to higher edcuation and became a Lecturer at the University of Liverpool (UoL). Gary also pursued his interest in graduate employability and became the Academic Lead for Employability in the university’s Management School. Gary left UoL at the end of 2018 and joined Durham as an Associate Professor in Accounting.

In 2019 Gary was appointed as a new member of CIMA’s discplinary committee.

Mini Biography

Gary joined the Business School as an Associate Professor in Accounting in January 2019. Prior to joining Gary was a Senior Lecturer in Accounting and Finance at the University of Liverpool.

Gary has over 20 years’ experience working within industry for UK and global organisations and is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (FCMA). Gary teaches a range of accounting and business subjects, including Management Accounting, Business Environment & Functions, Business Strategy and Corporate Governance.
