Visitor Services Team

Have you ever wanted to see and learn about our fascinating collections and exhibitions? Do you enjoy interacting with people from all walks of life?  

As a Visitor Services Volunteer, you will have the opportunity to experience our amazing exhibition spaces and galleries and to work in some of the most beautiful buildings Durham has to offer. You would support our staff in ensuring that all our visitors have an enjoyable experience. 

This role is varied and there are many different tasks you could be involved with. Some are available from the beginning of your time with us. Others are optional and may require further training. Activities include: 

  • Welcoming people to the exhibitions; directing visitors around our spaces; answering enquiries and helping people get the most from their visit 
  • Being vigilant to make sure visitors follow our gallery rules  
  • Assisting with Castle Tours by following the Castle Guide to make sure the group remain together
  • Sharing local knowledge and promoting our other venues. 

We are looking for people who: 

  • Have an interest in exhibitions, collections and working on a World Heritage Site  
  • Are willing to undertake training related to the role 
  • Are friendly, approachable, and confident in a busy environment
  • Have an enthusiasm for working with our visitors of all ages and background 
  • Want to share their passion for the collections/exhibitions in an engaging and interactive way 
  • Can volunteer at least one session per fortnight (students once per term).
