Flexibility is at the heart of the Durham Online MBA programme as you can personalise your programme to meet your career goals. You can study fully online, complete some of your learning at Durham, and undertake relevant optional modules.

Online MBA in detail

Structured around a two-year study calendar, you can choose to undertake the programme 100% online or take a blended approach where you combine your online learning with residential modules. Whichever way you choose, our comprehensive induction will equip you with an essential toolkit of study skills to help you prepare for your MBA.

Our virtual learning platform will be at the heart of your Online MBA experience. Through this, you’ll have 24/7 access to your learning materials including videos, industry insights and articles and will participate in a range of online activities that will help to immerse you in the subjects that you choose to study.

Connecting with other students is a key part of your learning experience and you will also benefit from joining live webinar sessions and taking part in tutor-facilitated group discussions via our online forum.

You will be expected to devote around 15 hours per week to study. Online modules are delivered over a 12 week period, including assessments.

Optional residential modules are offered in Durham at points throughout the year, bringing together students from around the world to provide support and inspiration to drive you forward. A study plan is provided for each cohort, and a programme team is available to help with module choices.

These are the foundation of your programme – establishing the management knowledge, understanding and research skills every leader needs.

Optional modules:

Depending on your career aspirations, you can either choose to study two optional modules that you find particularly interesting and most relevant to your future career.

Or alternatively, you can choose to study two modules within a structured pathway focusing on the area of entrepreneurship, consultancy or technology.

Strategic Consulting Project

The Strategic Consulting Project will provide you with the opportunity and support to conduct an in-depth investigation at an advanced level of an issue or a business challenge which is applicable to an industrial, commercial, public sector or charitable organisation. Working with a real company, you will analyse and evaluate a strategic issue, challenge and explore concepts and apply the knowledge and skills you have acquired in the classroom. This is an excellent opportunity for you to gain experience relevant to your career aspirations, enhance your professional network and pitch yourself as a future manager.

Your personal career advancement is an integral part of your Online MBA journey. Designed by identifying what global MBA recruiters demand and in consultation with MBA alumni, you will build, explore, discover and create your profile to elevate your global career.

These workshops are held throughout the year in Durham and are designed to enhance your personal skills. Core sessions include career and skills strategies, interview skills, developing a CV and covering letter.

Sector specific presentations

These sessions are delivered in Durham by specialists from within the industry. Subjects range from careers in finance, consultancy to renewable energy.

Your key leadership capabilities will be honed and enhanced through your MBA experience, to provide you with the practical knowledge and training you need to succeed.

Online resources

Durham students and alumni have access to a comprehensive selection of career development resources and tools, which include global job boards and international recruiter databases, an e-learning platform, newsrooms, video library and an annual career and leadership development webinar series.

Alumni career support

You can continue to make the most of our specialist career development advice after you graduate - from coaching with our MBA Career Consultants to workshops in locations in key global markets. You’ll also be able to attend online webinars and access the online career resources.

Entry requirements

  • Candidates must be able to demonstrate at least three years’ continuous post-graduation work experience, in one or more positions with significant managerial responsibility.
  • First or Upper Second Class Bachelors Degree, or international equivalent (applicants who do not meet this requirement will be required to submit a portfolio of evidence demonstrating capability in areas such as management experience, critical thinking skills and communication skills).
  • additionally, applicants whose first language is not English will be required to demonstrate evidence of proficiency in English language as follows: a recent test score of 7.0 or above in IELTS with no element below 6.0, 102 or above in TOEFL IBT with no element below 23 or an alternative University approved English language test. This course includes online activities, you will need a computer with reliable internet access. Our recommended operating systems are Microsoft Windows 7+ or Apple Mac MacOSx 10.9+.

We recommend a minimum 1 Mbps internet connection but a greater bandwidth (up to 8Mbps) will provide a better experience for some resources and events. If relying on an employer’s internet connection, be aware that firewall restrictions and policies may exist that prevent access to all or part of the course.

You will need:

  • The ability to open and edit Microsoft Office documents (e.g. Microsoft Office, OpenOffice or access to Googledocs)

  • A headset or headphones and microphone

To participate fully in some online events students should have a webcam and to access some tools and resources you may need the ability to install software.

You will need to complete the online application form.

As well as your online application, please submit the following:

  • Your CV or resume including: full details of previous employment, dates of employment, main duties and responsibilities, salary per annum (in £ sterling) and any periods of unemployment including dates and an explanation
  • Two employer references
  • Copy of your degree certificate (where appropriate)
  • Copy of your English test results (where appropriate)

Application Deadlines

In order to join the September 2023 cohort on Monday 18 September 2023, you must submit your application by Monday 28 August 2023. Any documentation to meet outstanding conditions must be submitted by Monday 4 September 2023. You must accept your offer and your offer be unconditional by Monday 11 September 2023.
