Placement Students

A placement brings invaluable learning opportunities and experience for our undergraduates. At the same time, it can bring huge benefits for you as a host – from access to new business ideas and perspectives, to a rich source of talented future recruits.

Above all, we see a placement as a fertile, two-way relationship that forms a vital element of every student’s development and helps strengthen our partnerships with business.

In recent years Durham University Business School students have worked at some of the world’s most forward-thinking businesses such as Accenture, Aldi, Deloitte, Enterprise Rent a Car, Ernst & Young LLP, General Electric, GSK, Johnson and Johnson, Morgan Stanley, IBM, KPMG, PwC, Rolls-Royce, Samsung, UBS, Walt Disney and Warner Brothers.

What’s in it for you?

Take part in our student placement programme and benefit from:

  • Latest theories and techniques - acquire the latest business knowledge as students apply their learning supported by your experienced teams

  • Fresh student thinking - commission live project work based on new techniques for which you may not otherwise have the resources

  • Energy and enthusiasm - enable staff to share in our students’ dynamism, at the same time as developing important supervisory skills

  • Future talent pool - assess student capabilities now, with a view to offering a permanent post later on

Timescales

Students are available from late June each year, and placements must end in time for them to return to their course at the end of September the following year.

Support

The Placement team will work closely with you throughout, with an academic tutor always on hand to support and guide the student to ensure the best experience for everyone involved.

What do we need from you?

In return, you’ll need to provide:

  • A Job description
  • A single point of contact or mentor to offer guidance and support
  • Attendance, where possible, at a meeting when the academic tutor visits their student
  • Completion of a brief employer evaluation survey towards the end of the placement period

It is this exciting combination of real-world challenge and careful guidance and mentoring that builds student confidence, enhances their employment prospects and adds to your resources. As the placement forms part of their degree - and as such they are required to submit reflective assessments, and a dissertation which may be on their placement during their final year - it is important that the student has real responsibilities and is treated as a true employee in order to gain as much as possible from the experience.
