All aboard for science: Celebrate Science 2025 at Locomotion

Children looking at a hologram of the universeOur annual free family science festival returns this October half term and this year we have a brand-new location at Locomotion in Shildon.

Celebrate Science 2025 is a partnership between Durham University and Locomotion, part of the Science Museum Group. Come along for two days of science themed fun, on Tuesday 28 and Wednesday 29 October 2025, 10am – 4pm. Join us for live science demonstrations, hands-on experiments, and creative activities for children of all ages — the perfect family day out this autumn.

Organised by our Science Engagement team with support from over 200 volunteers, Celebrate Science 2025 will be packed with opportunities to explore, create, and be inspired — in an exciting new setting at Locomotion!

Bring your family, invite your friends, and join us for two days of discovery and fun. It’s a fantastic way to spend the half term and ignite curiosity about the wonders of science. Celebrate Science 2025 is free to attend, but booking is required this year. Tickets will be released soon.

See what our visitors think

Our annual free science festival celebrates Durham University’s latest research with our local community, welcoming 7 to 11 year olds and their families.

Each year during the local schools’ October half-term holiday more than 200 staff and student volunteers from departments across the University engage and inspire young people. Since 2010 well over 71,000 visitors have shared in the excitement of Durham University research.
