The evening begins with Ethel Smyth’s scintillating Overture to The Wreckers followed by the virtuosic Cello Concerto in D minor by C.V Stanford performed by soloist Richard Jenkinson. The symphony orchestra are also delighted to be able to perform C.V. Stanford’s Incidental Music written to Lord Tennyson’s play Becket, a piece not heard for over 100 years, thanks to the research of Professor Jeremy Dibble. The concert concludes with Samuel-Coleridge Taylor’s sublime Variations on an African Air.
