We have received the University Mental Health Charter Award from Student Minds, the UK’s student mental health charity.

The University Mental Health Charter (UMHC) Award is an accreditation scheme designed to recognise good practice and support ongoing development in the area of mental health and wellbeing.

The UMHC was created by thousands of staff and students to shape a future in which everyone in higher education can thrive.

In its Outcome Report for Durham, Student Minds stated: “The [Assessment] Team acknowledges and commends the University's commitment to implementing a whole-university approach to mental health and wellbeing, which is evident in the resource allocation, core institutional mission and institutional strategies, policies, and procedures.”

The Report also states: “There are many examples of good and excellent work across the University and the Institution should be immensely proud of its progress […]. In particular, the Assessment Team highlights several outstanding initiatives which demonstrate excellent practice […].”

Those initiatives include student enrichment opportunities, proactive work on sexual misconduct and harassment, our dedicated student pathway with NHS Talking Therapies, reflective reviews for critical incidents, and the use of a Health Needs Assessment to provide a baseline of data for staff and student mental health needs.

Durham is among only the third cohort to seek and qualify for a UMHC Award.

We are thrilled to receive the University Mental Health Charter Award. The Award recognises everything we've done to invest in, develop and improve our health and wellbeing services for our diverse body of students and staff over several years, making our University a supportive and inclusive place to work, live and study.   We’re grateful to everybody who has played, and continues to play, a part in providing excellent support services to both students and staff across the University.
