The spirit of Diwali will light up the Oriental Museum on Saturday 18 October, 6-8pm as students and community volunteers welcome visitors to enjoy this vibrant celebration.
Diwali is the annual Indian Festival of Lights and is celebrated by Hindus, Sikhs, Jains and some Buddhists. It marks the victory of good over evil and hope over despair.
Fun for the whole family
Visitors of all ages will be able to explore the rich diversity of Indian culture and take part in traditional Diwali activities, including traditional prayers said to the goddess Lakshmi. There will be live music performed by South Asian musicians and dancers from the Balbir Singh Dance Company.
There will be a thrilling Ramayana shadow puppet performance for children. Visitors will also be invited to sample a range of vegetarian Indian snacks and try their hand at colourful arts and crafts activities.
Students from Durham University Hindu Society are collaborating with the Oriental Museum to host the event and are looking forward to welcoming visitors to share their celebrations.
