Centre for the Study of Ukraine - Vision Statement

Ukraine’s current visibility on the global stage has highlighted the urgent need for more nuanced, long-term, and interdisciplinary research into the country’s historical trajectories, social dynamics, and political transformations and industrial and academic potential. The Centre for the Study of Ukraine seeks to bridge disciplinary boundaries and promote rigorous scholarship that connects Ukraine’s past with its present challenges and future prospects. The Centre currently brings together experts in Modern History and Culture, Business and Marketing, Biosciences and Social Sciences, and the team has worked with colleagues across other schools and departments in the past. Drawing on insights from a variety of subjects and disciplines, the Centre has explored themes such as institutional development, social cohesion, and democratic resilience, crop genetics, ecology and adaptation to climatic conditions. We are looking forward to including experts from other disciplines in the near future.

Our vision is that a strong multidisciplinary approach is required for recovery and transformation of Ukraine  across academia and industry in the post-war period. To achieve our vision, our future projects will be focussed on:

  1. bringing together academics and practitioners from Ukraine, Europe and beyond, to facilitate collaborations and sharing of best practices;
  2. career development of aspiring and young academics via short- and long-term placements and co-supervised projects;
  3. public engagement and consultations, to inform society outside of Ukraine about the war and post-war experiences of the Ukrainian population.
