Judge Ida Caracciolo, Judge at the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea, opened the second round of our Global Law Lecture Series, 'New Frontiers in Environmental Adjudication', with her lecture on 'The ITLOS Advisory Opinion on Climate Change and International Law' at Durham Law School.
The second round of the 'Dialogue with the Judiciary Global Law Lecture Series' is being hosted by the Durham Centre for Sustainable Development Law and Policy. This round of the lecture series is inaugurated on the 8th of October 2025 with an opening lecture by Judge Ida Caracciolo on 'The ITLOS Advisory Opinion on Climate Change and International Law'.
This lecture series will examine how climate litigation is evolving in the wake of recent advisory opinions, and what this means for courts and tribunals around the world. We are looking forward to welcoming judges from international tribunals and courts, including from the International Court of Justice and from the Supreme Courts of the UK, South Africa, India, Hawaii, Nepal, Thailand, Pakistan, Barbados and from the higher courts of some other countries.
The hybrid session started with a warm welcome and introduction by Professor Volker Roeben, Dean of the Durham Law School, and was attended by undergraduate and postgraduate students and staff members. Judge Ida's lecture offered some unique insights into the work of the Tribunal and the legal nuances surrounding the deliberation and delivery of the landmark advisory opinion, the REQUEST FOR AN ADVISORY OPINION SUBMITTED BY THE COMMISSION OF SMALL ISLAND STATES ON CLIMATE CHANGE AND INTERNATIONAL LAW.
