What are the implications of the use of AI in medical research and practice on our understanding of health and illness? How does it change how we think about diagnostic categories? Can AI help recentre the human aspects of healthcare? And with technological innovation outpacing the development of regulatory and ethical frameworks, how can we ensure that AI tools benefit communities rather than exacerbate existing health inequalities?
From the use of ambient scribes in the consulting room to the ethical implications of algorithmic decision making in clinical settings, this research theme will use medical humanities approaches and methods to explore how AI technologies reshape medical practice, patient narratives and healthcare relationships.
