Biography

After studying at Brasenose College, Oxford and Warwick University, I worked as a teacher of English for three years in French universities, before being appointed temporary lecturer in French at Durham in 1980 (subsequently gaining promotion to lecturer, senior lecturer and professor). In 1992, I was a visiting professor in the English Department at Dijon University. From 1997 to 2000, I was Head of the School of Modern European Languages at Durham, and from 2002 to 2006 Director of Undergraduate studies and Chair of the School’s Teaching and Learning Committee. I was Chair of the Exams Boards from 2008 to 2010 and Head of French from 2010 to 2013, retiring from full-time teaching in 2014.

My teaching covered a wide range of courses at undergraduate and postgraduate level on nineteenth and twentieth-century literature and culture, as well as written French language. I supervised PhD students researching on fin-de-siècle fiction, film and literature related to World War Two, and science fiction.

My research covers two main areas, reflected in the seven books, five edited volumes of conference proceedings and many refereed articles which I have published, as well as unpublished lectures and conference papers: (a) the late nineteenth-century novel; (b) fiction, film and culture in France since the Second World War.

My book on the film director Henri-Georges Clouzot, published by Manchester University Press in 2007, was re-issued in paperback in 2016. Ongoing and recent projects include a book on Guy de Maupassant (published in Reaktion Books 'Critical Lives' series in 2020), papers on autobiography, post-colonial conflict, ghosts in the city, and a co-authored book on French World War Two narratives.

This co-authored book is the final outcome of a major joint project, which received funding of c. £450,000 from the Arts and Humanities Research Council, undertaken in collaboration with Professor Margaret Atack of Leeds University. For further details, go to:
