Godly Play: Children Theology and Urban Life
Godly Play is a Montessori based form of catechesis developed in the USA by Jerome Berryman. It has become a popular reflective way of telling the Christian story to children in church and primary school settings in the UK. As a reflective method, it has sometimes been claimed that Godly Play is not usable in an inner city context. I am investigating the impact of Godly Play on primary school children growing up in deprived neigbourhoods in the North of England.
I am a vicar of an urban parish in Middlesbrough, with one of the highest levels of childhood poverty in the UK, where we have been using Godly Play regularly with children for over ten years.
