Emma is studying towards a Masters of Jurisprudence (MJur) after completing her LLB Law degree at the College of St Hild and St Bede, Durham University. Emma was president of Durham Women in Law as an undergraduate and founded the Durham University Family Law Network. After completing her MJur she will be going on to study the Bar course and will undertake pupillage with the Government Legal Department.

Current Research

Emma’s thesis is titled ‘Domestic Abuse Law in England and Wales: Emerging Law and the Role of Criminal Justice’. Her research draws upon doctrinal and sociolegal methods to investigate domestic abuse law. Her work critically analyses the role of criminal law in cases of domestic abuse and considers the future of domestic abuse law by analysing the Domestic Abuse Act 2021. By drawing on feminist perspectives, Emma also discusses how the criminal law deals with women’s experiences of domestic abuse.

Emma seeks to highlight the value of the criminal law being used as part of a holistic response to domestic abuse, while advocating for more inclusive law and improvement of the criminal justice system in dealing with the experiences of women.
