Biography

MA in Oriental Studies at Selwyn College, Cambridge University. M.Phil. in Geography at Durham University 1981 "Environmental Alteration by Mesolithic Communities in the North York Moors." Ph.D. in Geography at Durham University 1989 "Fine Resolution Pollen Analysis of Late Flandrian II Peat at North Gill, North York Moors." Current Research Interests My current research interests include human palaeoecology, particularly in relation to Mesolithic communities and their impact upon the environment. Recent focus has been upon land-use and environment during the Mesolithic-Neolithic Transition, particularly the palaeoecology of the introduction of cereal cultivation. I am working on the use of fungal spore analyses in palaeoecology and environmental archaeology, microcharcoal analyses, and the applications of very fine resolution palynology.

Research interests

  • Non-pollen palynomorph (NPP) palaeoecology
  • Palynology of the 'Initial Neolithic' in Britain
  • Mesolithic palaeoecology

Research Projects

  • Land and Sea-Level Changes Around Britain
  • Monsoon Climate, Sea-Level Change and Major Cultural Changes in the Yangtze lowlands, China
  • Swale-Ure Washlands Project, The
