I studied Mathematics and Computer Science obtaining a BEd from Durham University. I taught mathematics and computer science at Darlington and Hartlepool colleges before becoming Vice Principal at Redcar college, then principal of Stockton Riverside College. I studied throughout my working career including various mathematics and computer science modules with the Open University. I also obtained an MBA at South Bank University. I studied various history moodules with the Open University obtaining a BA Hons degree then a Masters Degree with merit including a dissertation on Poor Law implementation from 1837 to the 1850s in Chester-le-Street Union. I am now undertaking a History PhD with Durham University on a full time basis. My research builds on my earlier work on Poor Law operation and is extended to encompass unions across County Durham. The research covers the nineteenth century, incorporates a wider range of provision and operations and makes comparisons with poor relief operations across Britain and Europe.
