Phanatdao is a first year doctoral student on a fully-funded scholarship from Suratthani Rajabhat University, Suratthani Province, Thailand where she has worked as an English lecturer in the Faculty of Education for three years. She earned a first class honours Bachelor’s degree in English from the Liberal Arts Faculty, Thammasat University, before completing a Master of Education in Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL – International Programme) from Chulalongkorn University, Bangkok, Thailand. Her MEd study was focused on bilingual education and English Program particularly in Suratthani Province, south of Thailand. She has always dreamed of being an English language teacher in provincial areas where she hopes she can make a difference to the lives of students there. Before pursuing her doctoral degree, she was a member of the Lower Mekong Initiative Professional Communication Skills for Leaders (LMI PCSL) Community of Practice (CoP) for three years where members from five different countries in Southeast Asia (Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand, and Vietnam) collaborate both face-to-face and on an online platform to help develop English language capacity, technical and teacher training, and foster greater regional cooperation.
Phanatdao’s doctoral study focuses on the effectiveness of cooperative learning in enhancing student teachers’ English language learning in tertiary EFL classrooms in Thailand. If successful, Phanatdao hopes that cooperative learning can be introduced as an effective alternative method to English language teaching in teacher training courses, and also prompt teacher trainees to use the method in their own teaching.
