Access

The Museum of Archaeology is housed within the historic Palace Green Library complex located on Durham’s World Heritage Site, nestled between Durham Castle and Durham Cathedral. 

Accessible parking and bus transport

Parking is available within a 5-10 minute walk of Palace Green Library. To find out more about designated accessible parking options please visit the Durham County Council website.   

The Cathedral Bus stops opposite Palace Green Library and can be taken from the bus or rail stations and the Market Place. 

Durham City Shopmobility

Electric scooters, manual and powered wheelchairs are available from Durham City Shopmobility on short- or long-term rental.

Visually impaired and blind visitors

Light levels: High light levels cause damage to many fragile objects. For this reason, the lights in some areas of the museum are kept low. If you require additional assistance, please speak to a member of staff.

Large print guides are available in all of our permanent galleries and for our special exhibitions.

Access for D/deaf visitors

We are working to improve access for D/deaf visitors.

There is a portable hearing loop at the museum reception desk.

In some galleries, we use video displays, most of which have subtitles in English. Currently, the videos are not available with British Sign Language interpretation.
