Graduand Accessibility and Special Arrangements

Purple tabard reading

Graduands are given the opportunity to advise of any special requirements for themselves and guests when registering for the ceremony. Graduands and guests can also contact the Ceremonies Team directly to discuss any special arrangements or accessibility issues that may affect either themselves or their guests while attending Congregation so we can provide advice or support as appropriate.

Information for Graduands with Additional Requirements

  • On arrival, graduands need to report to the Teaching and Learning Centre to register and collect their robes.
  • Either guests or graduands can to collect guest tickets from the Guest Ticket Desk on the first floor in the Teaching and Learning Centre. We recommend for guests to collect tickets whilst the graduand registers and collects their robes.
  • Graduands gather in the Great Hall of University College/ Castle and are lined up in procession order in the courtyard. Graduands then process across Palace Green to the Cathedral. During the ceremony, graduands walk up 2 steps onto the stage (there will be a ramp installed too) to shake hands with the Presiding Officer before returning to their seats.
  • If you have any concerns with this process or may require assistance, contact the Ceremonies Team.

Complimentary Shuttle Bus Service

A complimentary shuttle service will be in operation between the Teaching and Learning Centre and Palace Green. This service is strictly available for guests with mobility issues, however it can be used for Graduands too.

Palace Green - Access and Parking Options

There is no public parking on Palace Green (the area between the Castle and the Cathedral). Durham City Centre will be very busy on Congregation days.

There are various car parks situated around Durham, including Durham's Park and Ride service, and metered on-street parking.

If you or your guests have mobility issues, you can be dropped off at the bottom of Owengate (the road that leads to Palace Green) by car or taxi.

Limited disabled parking is available opposite the Teaching and Learning Centre.
