DI: Live Creating virtual universes in our quest to understand the cosmos with Dr Sownak Bose
As part of the Durham Inspired: Live Programme Associate Professor Dr Sownak Bose will be discussing 'Creating virtual universes in our quest to understand the cosmos'.
Cosmos
One of the most remarkable discoveries made by the astronomical community in the last century is the realisation that most of the universe is unobservable to us, even with our most powerful telescopes.
In particular, the dominant source of gravity—which is the architect of structure in our Universe—is the mysterious “dark matter”, an as yet undiscovered particle that does not interact with light, but is all around us.
In his talk, Dr Bose will discuss how supercomputer simulations can be used to construct “virtual universes” that help us understand dark matter: what it might be, how we might detect it, and how it enabled the formation of stars and galaxies in our cosmos.
The session will be via Zoom and will include a Q&A session.
