The Pigments of British Medieval Illuminators

Following the publication of the acclaimed The Pigments of British Medieval Illuminators, this session will summarise key findings from the decade-long project that underpinned that work - exploring the chronology and rationale of pigment use from the seventh to the fifteenth century, and considering cases where pigment identification plays a crucial part in resolving historical and art-historical conundrums.

In addition, it will introduce the newest non-invasive techniques for pigment identification, and will consider some of the broader issues concerning early inks, pigments, and how they were used that the Team is now investigating.
