Dr Paul McGonigal and Dr Yulong Sun of Durham Chemistry took advantage of host-guest interactions for incorporating a low-friction coating onto surfaces using beta-cyclodextrin hosts and adamantyl guests. Such coatings, if worn by friction, can be repaired at the supramolecular scale and may have applications in artificial joints in humans such as hip replacements leading to longer lasting lubricating joints. This excellent work was carried out in collaboration with coworkers in Beijing and York.
