Humans have always been fascinated by the night sky. If you're interested in finding out more about what we can see in the night sky and what it tells us about life out there as well as life down here on Earth, then come along for 'What On Earth Is That?' a series of three rearranged events taking place across the region in January and February as part of this year’s Being Human Festival.

Night Sky

You'll learn about what we can observe in the north-east’s designated Dark Skies with the naked eye and through telescopes, and will have the chance to speak with Durham university researchers and local artists about what it means for people on Earth today.

All three rearranged events will take place between at three dark skies locations across the region, spaces are limited to those who previously had booked for the original event date. The events are suitable for adults and older families.

Please wear warm clothing - it can get a bit chilly out there! The winter weather means a cloudless sky can't be guaranteed, but unless the weather presents a health and safety risk this event will go ahead as best it can.

High Force Hotel and Waterfall, Tuesday 17 January, 5pm - 11pm
Join philosophers Professor Phillip Horky and Dr Joe Saunders at this spectacular venue, supported by stargazing experts Star Safaris, and learn to ask new questions of the night sky.

Grassholme Observatory, Thursday 19 January, 8pm to 11pm
Join philosopher Dr Christopher Cowie for an evening exploring Durham’s Dark skies from new perspectives.

Grassholme Observatory Family Astronomy, Thursday 19 January, 6pm – 7.30pm
Researchers and Grassholme Observatory's experts will give an interactive talk, then children will be able to see and touch rocks from space – meteorites! This event is the most suitable for families with activities for primary school children.

North Pennines Observatory at Allenheads Contemporary Arts, new date TBC

Join Durham University’s Professor Simon James and Odile Lehnen, and artist in residence Susan Eyre for an evening which will open horizons on the skies around us.

Please note that these events are now fully booked.
