After a whole year of closed concert halls and empty auditoriums, Durham is thrilled to finally present their musical return to life as we know it, by opening their concert season with a bang!

Rescheduled from 2020, Durham University Orchestral Society will perform a world premiere, a student composition, commissioned by DUOS, for Sir Thomas Allen to perform as a narrator alongside the University Chamber Orchestra. The composition competition, with set text chosen personally by Sir Tom, was held last year, and after an intense scrutiny Marcello Palazzo’s poignant ‘Faultlines’ emerged as a winning piece. Marcello is graduating this year and is set to continue his studies in composition at the Royal Academy of Music in London in September.
Including many ‘firsts’ for Durham University, this performance, held in a world-class venue with world-class performers, is also opening the concert season in this year like no other – and ‘Faultlines’ seem a perfect metaphor! Echoing Sir Tom’s words: “Commissioning a piece… to be encouraged anywhere, but especially in a University environment”, we feel honoured to be marking the occasion by sharing the stage with the man himself in June!
The concert will also feature great orchestral classics that we all know and love, such as Stravinsky Firebird 1919, Wagner Prelude, Liebestod from Tristan and Isolde and Beethoven Symphony 8.
