Since the inception of our Mathematical Sciences department, we have expanded significantly. Our student and staff numbers have gone up resulting in an enhanced global research reputation for Maths.
Mathematical Sciences moved to a new £42m building on Upper Mountjoy in 2021, which has been designed with a key focus on shared learning spaces.
These shared spaces have helped us to grow the learning community in the Department where students and staff take part in research conversations, which can lead to new collaboration opportunities.
The expansion has enabled us to launch an undergraduate degree in Mathematics and Statistics. It has also allowed us to be greatly involved in the Master of Data Science.
We have partnered with Scott Logic, a software consultancy based in Newcastle, to fund Global Masters Scholarships for Postgraduate Taught students from lower- or middle-income countries.
So far, we have had two scholars from Palestine and Bangladesh.
We have significantly expanded in our key research areas.
Our Probability Group has grown from a team of four to 15, making it one of the largest in the UK.
Additionally, we have established an Analysis group in Pure Mathematics and our Applied Maths group has diversified to include exciting new directions in mathematical biology.
Our Department of Mathematical Sciences combines world-leading research with a dedication to the learning experience of our students. Ranked 4th in the UK in The Complete University Guide 2023, we offer a unique blend of high-quality teaching and research across a wide range of disciplines and provide practical experience to support future careers and employment prospects.
