Blueprint Startup Challenge, Building blocks with symbols

The Blueprint Startup Challenge is back and better than ever - with a £50,000 prize fund up for grabs! Durham’s flagship business idea competition is now in its 21st year of supporting our students and graduates to launch and grow successful startups.

The Blueprint Startup Challenge is open to students with any startup idea and at any stage of development. The competition is a year-long process, running over Michaelmas and Epiphany terms, that provides a package of support, designed to help students develop their business ideas. Run by the Venture Lab team, within the Careers & Enterprise department, it offers:

  • Weekly workshops to help you understand business fundamentals
  • Social events to support peer-to-peer networking
  • 'Meet the Entrepreneur' sessions with Durham alumni - including one of the founding partners of Spotify
  • Business coaching with our Entrepreneur in Residence
  • Pitching practice sessions to build your confidence
  • Access to the Venture Lab co-working space - a dedicated place for you to work on your ideas (with free tea & coffee to keep you going!)

The competition will culminate in the Grand Final in June 2024, with the winners receiving the Blueprint Award at the Celebration of Enterprise Event and prize money totalling £50,000.

Enterprise Manager, Rachel Bickerdike, is looking forward to seeing some exciting ideas proposed. She said; “This is a great chance for our students and recent graduates to showcase their ideas and get their businesses off the ground, with support from the Venture Lab team.”

Recent Durham startups have been featured by Earthshot Prize, BBC’s Dragons Den, Wired Magazine and Forbes 30 Under 30, and have been on some of the world’s most famous accelerator programmes including IndieBio and Tech Stars.

For more information on the support on offer in the Venture Lab, come along to the Blueprint Startup Challenge Launch Event on Wednesday 11 October, 6-8pm, Hazan Venture Lab, Mathematical Sciences & Computer Sciences Building.
