Durham Castle and Cathedral in the winter

Want to know more about how we interact with our local community? Our monthly Community Newsletter explores the news, events, and research both at Durham University and in the city itself.

February is a busy month with a host of events taking place across the city.

Latest news and events

This includes performances by our students at the Gala Theatre and the Sir Thomas Allen Assembly Rooms Theatre, with tickets still available.

This month, we’re hosting a panel discussion exploring the role of culture in the regeneration of the North East and the first of our Post-offer visit days will also take place, which provides those with an offer from our University the opportunity to come and explore our facilities and the city to see if we are the perfect fit for them

There are still some places available on our Team Durham Holiday camps for the February half-term and don’t miss out on the Lunar New Year Lantern Festival at our Oriental Museum later this month.

Our newsletter spotlights an interview with Rebecca Thomson – a Durham University graduate, who was the first journalist to report on the Post Office miscarriage of justice story.

We have updates on our ongoing work at Boldon House, our sustainability work, our plan for Durham Global Week and news of funding being secured to help regenerate County Durham through arts, science and culture.

Also, don’t forget that this month we're inviting businesses that employ our students to enter our Student Employee of the Year Awards.

Research highlights

Our academics have continued to produce impactful research.

Key highlights include a new AI model being developed to personalise chemotherapy care, assessing the effects of ibuprofen on pre-term babies born with heart conditions, a new world record for our Physics team and strong connections being made with colleagues at the University of Tubingen in Germany.
