Our University Secretary Dr Amanda Wilcox has been honoured by His Majesty King Charles III for services to Higher Education.

Amanda, who is responsible for the University’s overall governance, assurance and legal compliance, has been made an MBE in The King’s Birthday Honours list.

She is honoured after a career that has seen her spend 30 years in Higher Education to date.

Extensive experience

Amanda, who lives in York, has extensive experience in Higher Education.

She joined us in 2022 from York St John University where she was Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Governance and Student Life).

Amanda has also served at the Office for Students, the Higher Education Funding Council, the University of Hull and the Quality Assurance Agency.

She has an MBA from the UCL Institute of Education, a PGCE from the University of Huddersfield and a PhD in parasitology and immunology from the University of Leeds.

The Chair of University Council, Joe Docherty, said: “This honour for Amanda Wilcox is truly deserved recognition of her expertise and dedication. The Durham University community is very proud of her achievement and service to higher education.”

Good governance

The University Secretary’s Office includes our Governance and Executive Support, Information Governance, Legal Services, and University Assurance Service teams.

Amanda also supports and advises University Council – the University’s governing body and board of trustees, alongside other governance committees.

Amanda’s broad perspective, unerring independence and good judgement, and experience of the Higher Education sector are invaluable in achieving good governance, which is essential to the leadership and decision-making of any University. The award of her MBE, reflecting her long and successful career in the sector, is very well deserved. I have sent her my warmest congratulations.
