One of our Law professors will play a key role in the review of professional values, knowledge and behaviours expected of UK medics.
Professor Emma Cave, an expert in healthcare law, will chair the General Medical Council’s advisory forum.
The forum will act as a sounding board for key decisions and developments, as the GMC looks to make changes to its overarching guidance for practising medical professionals.
It will help steer a review of the GMC’s Good medical practice, which sets out core guidance for UK doctors.
The GMC will review every element of its guidance, last updated in 2013, to see where changes and updates are needed.
It will also look at how Good medical practice will apply to associate physicians and anaesthetists when they come into its regulation in future.
This is the third prestigious appointment for Emma, who serves on the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority and has also advised the UK’s Infected Blood Inquiry on medical ethics.
She said: “Good medical practice is the bedrock that helps guide ethical decision-making, as well as the building and maintaining of trust and high standards.
“Much has changed in the years since it was last updated, and so this is an important time for a review.
“I am delighted to chair the forum that will act as a critical friend to the GMC throughout the process.”
