Strategic Partnerships

Durham University is in a strategic partnership with Zaporizhzhia National University (ZNU). The memorandum of agreement between the two universities was signed in the summer of 2022, following Russia’s full-scale assault on Ukraine. The Centre capitalises on the successes of the UUKi-funded twinning project ‘Multidisciplinary approaches to building research capacity and resilience through partnerships during conflict’ (2023-24, PI: Jane Macnaughton, Co-I: Markian Prokopovych) and other Ukrainian-related research and other activities at Durham University. Among them is the IAS Major project ‘Looking Back to Move Forward: History, Recovery, and Sustainability in Understanding the War in Ukraine on a Global Scale’ (2024-2025, PIs: Markian Prokopovych and Chrysostomos Apostolidis) and the public-facing Ukrainian Talks organised (with over 30 speakers to date) in partnership with Durham County Council. The Centre facilitates academic exchange and collaborative research between Durham Biosciences and ZNU Biology departments via Master student research visits, supported by Durham University.
