This session explores the Singapore Convention on Mediation and its relevance to English legal practitioners. Drawing on insights from the SIDRA Survey, it examines what users value in mediation, such as confidentiality, mediator quality, and enforceability, and how these preferences intersect with the Convention’s key features.

The talk will also consider the Convention’s growing international uptake, compare it with the New York Convention, and assess the UK’s current stance as a signatory that has yet to ratify. The final segment addresses the legal and strategic implications for the UK legal community, particularly in light of mediation’s expanding role in civil justice reform.
Senior Research Associate at SIDRA
Yuying is a Senior Research Associate at the Singapore International Dispute Resolution Academy, focussing on arbitration and mediation. She has published in leading journals and spoke at international forums such as UNCITRAL, ANZSIL and Society of Legal Scholars. She is also a co-author in the recent reform project led by the Ministry of Law on the Singapore International Arbitration Act. An accredited mediator, she has conducted training in countries including Brunei, Vietnam, and Samoa. Yuying teaches dispute resolution at the Yong Pung How School of Law as an Adjunct Teaching Mentor as well.
