John Launer’s book reflects on the emergence of the ‘Conversations Inviting Change’ narrative medicine training programme.

The Narrative Practices Lab in the Discovery Research Platform for Medical Humanities invites you to an online and in-person seminar presented by Dr John Launer at the Institute for Medical Humanities, Durham University, on 8 March 2024. Lunch will be served from 12pm with the seminar starting at 12.30–1.30pm.

Conversations Inviting Change (CIC) is the name for an approach to training in narrative practice for professionals in health and social care, first developed at the Tavistock Clinic in London for primary care staff in the early days of the Narrative Medicine movement. It is focused on the application of narrative ideas and skills to everyday encounters including consultations with patients and clients, peer supervision and multiprofessional teamwork. Through activities from one day workshops to courses lasting a year, CIC has been taught by accredited trainers to thousands of practitioners in the UK, Europe and worldwide, including the USA, Australia the Middle East and Japan.

In this seminar, Dr John Launer, one of the originators of the approach and honorary president of the Association of Narrative Practice in Healthcare, will present an account of the approach with examples of practice. For further information visit the CIC website and John's recent article in The Polyphony.

This event will be chaired by Dr Laura Mazzoli Smith from the Narrative Practices Lab in the Discovery Research Platform for Medical Humanities.
